4.2 quake 20 km NE of Gamay, Philippines, 31 Oct 4.32 am (GMT +8)
A very shallow magnitude 4.2 earthquake was reported early morning near the town of Anito, Philippines.
According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the quake hit on Saturday 31 October 2020 at 4.32 am local time at a very shallow depth of 1 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows etc.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt, based on preliminary calculations, include Anito (pop. 2,100) at a distance of 20 km with light shaking, Gamay (pop. 9,100) at a distance of 20 km with light shaking, Catarman (pop. 47,400) at a distance of 90 km with very weak shaking, and Catbalogan (pop. 68,100) at a distance of 99 km with very weak shaking.
