4.4 quake 53 km E of Arica, Chile, 31 Oct 11.47 pm (GMT -3)
An earthquake of magnitude 4.4 occurred only 21 minutes ago 81 km southeast of Tacna, Chile, the National Seismological Center of the University of Chile reported.
The quake hit at an intermediate depth of 79 km beneath the epicenter late at night on Saturday 31 October 2020 at 11.47 pm local time. The magnitude, exact epicenter location and depth of the quake are likely to be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) agency, which listed it as a magnitude 4.4 earthquake as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt, based on preliminary calculations, include Arica (pop. 186,000) at a distance of 53 km with weak shaking, Sobraya (pop. 700) at a distance of 80 km with very weak shaking, Tacna (pop. 280,100) at a distance of 81 km with very weak shaking, and Piedra Blanca (pop. 600) at a distance of 81 km with very weak shaking.
