4.8 quake 19 km W of Karpenísi, Greece, 2 Nov 1.09 am (GMT +2)
A very shallow magnitude 4.8 earthquake was reported early morning near the town of Karpenísi, Greece.
According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the quake hit on Monday 2 November 2020 at 1.09 am local time at a very shallow depth of 2 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The magnitude, exact location of the epicenter, and depth of the quake are likely to be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service at VolcanoDiscovery identified a second report from the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.2.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows etc.
Towns or cities where the quake likely was felt include Karpenísi (pop. 6,900) located 19 km from the epicenter and likely affected by light shaking, Spoláïta (pop. 500) located 29 km from the epicenter and likely affected by light shaking, Pátra (pop. 168,000) located 71 km from the epicenter and likely affected by weak shaking, and Lárisa (pop. 144,700) located 111 km from the epicenter and likely affected by weak shaking.
This story will be updated soon by VolcanoDiscovery. If you're in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
