According to the Nicaraguan Institute of Territorial Studies (INETER), the quake hit on Saturday 7 November 2020 at 7.23 pm local time at a shallow depth of 10 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc. Weak shaking might have been felt in La Gomera (pop. 24,000) located 57 km from the epicenter, Nueva Concepción (pop. 11,100) 62 km away, Puerto San José (pop. 18,700) 63 km away, Tiquisate (pop. 18,200) 71 km away, Iztapa (pop. 4,000) 74 km away, Santa Lucía Cotzumalguapa (pop. 62,100) 84 km away, Escuintla (pop. 103,200) 94 km away, and Amatitlán (pop. 71,800) 119 km away.
