A magnitude 4.8 earthquake was reported only 20 minutes ago by the United States Geological Survey (USGS), considered one of the key international agencies that monitor seismic activity worldwide. The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 10 km beneath the epicenter around noon on Tuesday 10 November 2020 at 12.19 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service at VolcanoDiscovery identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.8 as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc. Weak shaking might have been felt in Pamandzi (pop. 9,100) located 29 km from the epicenter, Dzaoudzi (pop. 15,300) 31 km away, Mamoudzou (pop. 54,800) 34 km away, Koungou (pop. 18,100) 37 km away, Dembeni (pop. 10,100) 40 km away, Bandrélé (pop. 6,400) 41 km away, Ouangani (pop. 7,300) 45 km away, and Chirongui (pop. 6,200) 46 km away.
