A shallow magnitude 4.5 earthquake was reported in the morning near the town of Nueva Concepción, Guatemala.
According to the Nicaraguan Institute of Territorial Studies (INETER), the quake hit on Tuesday 10 November 2020 at 10.41 am local time at a shallow depth of 25 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Nueva Concepción (pop. 11,100) located 29 km from the epicenter, La Gomera (pop. 24,000) 34 km away, Tiquisate (pop. 18,200) 38 km away, Río Bravo (pop. 7,600) 51 km away, La Democracia (pop. 5,500) 52 km away, Escuintla (pop. 103,200) 71 km away, Amatitlán (pop. 71,800) 95 km away, and Chimaltenango (pop. 82,400) 97 km away.
