The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported a magnitude 3.5 quake in the California near the town of Ferndale only 4 minutes ago. The earthquake hit in the evening on Friday 13 November 2020 at 9.50 pm local time at a shallow depth of 10.3 miles. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service at VolcanoDiscovery identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 3.5 as well.
Despite its relatively small magnitude, the quake could probably be felt very close to the epicenter. Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Ferndale (pop. 1,400) located 26 miles from the epicenter, Loleta (pop. 800) 29 miles away, Indianola (pop. 800) 31 miles away, Fortuna (pop. 12,000) 32 miles away, Rio Dell (pop. 3,400) 32 miles away, Eureka (pop. 27,000) 38 miles away, Bayside (pop. 17,100) 44 miles away, and Arcata (pop. 17,800) 45 miles away.

Data for the same earthquake reported by different agencies

Info: The more agencies report about the same quake and post similar data, the more confidence you can have in the data. It takes normally up to a few hours until earthquake parameters are calculated with near-optimum precision.
