4.7 quake 23 km east of Mŭ’minobod, Tajikistan, 17 Nov 12.35 pm (GMT +5)
An earthquake of magnitude 4.7 occurred only 10 minutes ago 51 km northeast of Kŭlob, Tajikistan, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported.
The quake hit at a shallow depth of 10 km beneath the epicenter around noon on Tuesday 17 November 2020 at 12.35 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service at VolcanoDiscovery identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.7 as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc. Weak shaking might have been felt in Mŭ'minobod (pop. 12,000) located 23 km from the epicenter, Kŭlob (pop. 78,800) 51 km away, Sovet (pop. 8,700) 62 km away, Vose'(pop. 21,700) 68 km away, Chubek (pop. 19,600) 78 km away, Roghun (pop. 7,700) 80 km away, Danghara (pop. 22,800) 83 km away, and Vahdat (pop. 45,700) 121 km away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you're in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
