4.2 quake CENTRAL TURKEY 18 Nov 2.05 am (GMT +3)
A shallow magnitude 4.2 earthquake was reported early morning near the town of Uğurludağ, Turkey.
According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the quake hit on Wednesday 18 November 2020 at 2.05 am local time at a shallow depth of 11 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service at VolcanoDiscovery identified a second report from the Kandilli Oservatory and Earthquake Research Institute in Istanbul (KOERI-RETMC) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.1.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc. Weak shaking might have been felt in Uğurludağ (pop. 7,400) located 11 km from the epicenter, İskilip (pop. 19,800) 29 km away, Sungurlu (pop. 37,500) 37 km away, Çorum (pop. 183,400) 52 km away, Yapraklı (pop. 6,400) 55 km away, Alaca (pop. 27,000) 56 km away, and Khanjarah (pop. 71,400) 62 km away.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Yozgat (pop. 87,900) located 85 km from the epicenter.
