A magnitude 4.7 earthquake was reported only 28 minutes ago by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), considered one of the key international agencies that monitor seismic activity worldwide. The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 16 km beneath the epicenter in the afternoon on Tuesday 17 November 2020 at 5.55 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Cachimbo (pop. 100) located 93 km from the epicenter, San Francisco del Mar Viejo (pop. 4,000) 94 km away, Santa María del Mar (pop. 800) 97 km away, Pesquería Rancho Salinas (pop. 600) 98 km away, Cerro Grande (pop. 500) 99 km away, Salina Cruz (pop. 73,600) 108 km away, Santo Domingo Tehuantepec (pop. 37,400) 125 km away, and Juchitán de Zaragoza (pop. 67,600) 125 km away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available.
