A shallow magnitude 4.3 earthquake was reported in the morning near the town of El Alto, Peru.
According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the quake hit on Wednesday 18 November 2020 at 10.04 am local time at a shallow depth of 10 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data.
Our monitoring service at VolcanoDiscovery identified a second report from the Institute of Geophysics of the National Polytechnic School in Quito (IGEPN) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.3 as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in El Alto (pop. 9,300) located 81 km from the epicenter, and El Ñuro (pop. 1000) 83 km away.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Máncora (pop. 9,100) located 94 km from the epicenter, Talara (pop. 99,100) 95 km away, Angolo (pop. 100) 97 km away, and Punta Sal (pop. 100) 100 km away.
