Just 10 minutes ago, a 4.7-magnitude earthquake struck near the village of Santa María del Mar, Mexico. The tremor was recorded early morning on Thursday 19 November 2020 at 3.59 am local time, at a shallow depth of 17 km below the surface.
The event was filed by the Nicaraguan Institute of Territorial Studies (INETER), the first seismological agency to report it.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Santa María del Mar (pop. 800) located 100 km from the epicenter, San Francisco del Mar Viejo (pop. 4,000) 101 km away, Laguna Santa Cruz (pop. 400) 102 km away, San Mateo del Mar (pop. 5,400) 102 km away, El Pacífico (pop. 400) 102 km away, Salina Cruz (pop. 73,600) 106 km away, San Blas Atempa (pop. 12,000) 123 km away, and Santo Domingo Tehuantepec (pop. 37,400) 123 km away.
