The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported a magnitude 4.7 quake in Colombia near the town of Piedecuesta 33 minutes ago. The earthquake hit early evening on Thursday 19 November 2020 at 7.57 pm local time at an intermediate depth of 146 km. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 4.7 earthquake as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Piedecuesta (pop. 86,400) located 14 km from the epicenter.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Jordán (pop. 100) located 15 km from the epicenter, Cepitá (pop. 400) 16 km away, Aratoca (pop. 2,100) 20 km away, Floridablanca (pop. 252,300) 22 km away, Zapatoca (pop. 6,100) 22 km away, Bucaramanga (pop. 571,800) 29 km away, and Barrancabermeja (pop. 191,400) 89 km away.
