5.8 quake 20 Nov 11:11 pm (GMT -3)
5.8 quake 20 Nov 11:11 pm (GMT -3)
Chile was shaken near the town of Ovalle by an earthquake of magnitude 5.8 only 6 minutes ago, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported.
The quake hit at a shallow depth of 10 km beneath the epicenter late at night on Friday 20 November 2020 at 11.11 pm local time. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should have been widely felt by almost everyone in the area of the epicenter. It might have caused light to moderate damage. Moderate shaking probably occurred in Ovalle (pop. 77,100) located 48 km from the epicenter, and Monte Patria (pop. 13,900) 61 km away.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Illapel (pop. 22,800) located 87 km from the epicenter, Coquimbo (pop. 161,300) 109 km away, Salamanca (pop. 13,300) 110 km away, La Serena (pop. 154,500) 116 km away, Vicuña (pop. 13,500) 126 km away, and La Ligua (pop. 24,900) 173 km away.
