Just 9 minutes ago, a 5.3-magnitude earthquake struck near the town of Takahagi, Japan. The tremor was recorded early evening on Sunday 22 November 2020 at 7.05 pm local time, at an intermediate depth of 71 km below the surface.
The event was filed by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), the first seismological agency to report it.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc. Weak shaking might have been felt in Takahagi (pop. 33,600) located 49 km from the epicenter, Kitaibaraki (pop. 50,800) 51 km away, Hitachi (pop. 186,300) 51 km away, Funaishikawa (pop. 35,300) 58 km away, Ōarai (pop. 19,300) 61 km away, Tokyo (pop. 8,336,600) 165 km away, Kawasaki (pop. 1,306,800) 174 km away, and Yokohama (pop. 3,574,400) 185 km away.
