A magnitude 4.9 earthquake near Pampa Honda was reported only 6 minutes ago by the Nicaraguan Institute of Territorial Studies (INETER), considered the main national agency that monitors seismic activity in this part of the world. The earthquake occurred at a very shallow depth of 3 km beneath the epicenter early evening on Sunday 22 November 2020 at 7.24 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Pampa Honda (pop. 100) located 84 km from the epicenter, Barrita de Pajón (pop. 400) 84 km away, La Esperanza (El Zapotal) (pop. 1000) 85 km away, Buenavista (pop. 400) 86 km away, El Palmarcito (pop. 1,100) 86 km away, Mapastepec (pop. 16,100) 103 km away, Pijijiapan (pop. 15,100) 105 km away, and Escuintla (pop. 9,600) 117 km away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
