An earthquake of magnitude 4.5 occurred only 23 minutes ago 14 km southwest of Puerto Escondido, Mexico, Mexico's National Seismological Service (SSN) reported.
The quake hit at a very shallow depth of 5 km beneath the epicenter near Puerto Escondido in the evening on Sunday 22 November 2020 at 9.01 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 4.5 earthquake as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc. Weak shaking might have been felt in Puerto Escondido (pop. 25,900) located 14 km from the epicenter, El Jícaro (pop. 300) 14 km away, Brisas de Zicatela (pop. 9,800) 14 km away, Colonia Libertad (pop. 600) 15 km away, Barra de Navidad (pop. 700) 15 km away, Marinero (pop. 200) 15 km away, Miahuatlán de Porfirio Díaz (pop. 17,600) 86 km away, and Miahuatlán de Porfirio Díaz (pop. 23,900) 86 km away.
