An earthquake of magnitude 4.4 occurred only 11 minutes ago 54 km southwest of La Ceiba, Honduras, the Nicaraguan Institute of Territorial Studies (INETER) reported.
The quake hit at a shallow depth of 10 km beneath the epicenter near La Rosa late at night on Sunday 22 November 2020 at 11.19 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc. Weak shaking might have been felt in La Rosa (pop. 1,600) located 13 km from the epicenter, San Antonio (pop. 1,700) 21 km away, Yoro (pop. 15,800) 26 km away, Santa Rita (pop. 12,900) 38 km away, San Juan Pueblo (pop. 5,700) 43 km away, La Ceiba (pop. 130,200) 54 km away, Tela (pop. 29,300) 76 km away, and El Progreso (pop. 100,800) 91 km away.
