4.5 quake 23 Nov 10:44 pm (GMT -3)
An earthquake of magnitude 4.5 occurred late at night on Monday 23 November 2020 at 10.44 pm local time near Puente Alto, Chile, as reported by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC).
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at an intermediate depth of 113 km. The strength of the earthquake may have been tempered by its relative great depth below the surface, which makes it feel weaker in absolute terms. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the United States Geological Survey (USGS), which listed it as a magnitude 4.5 earthquake as well.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Puente Alto (pop. 510,400) located 24 km from the epicenter, La Pintana (pop. 201,200) 30 km away, Villa Presidente Frei, Ñuñoa, Santiago, Chile (pop. 15,000) 33 km away, San Bernardo (pop. 249,900) 36 km away, Santiago (pop. 4,837,300) 38 km away, Buin (pop. 55,400) 40 km away, Paine (pop. 32,800) 42 km away, and Lo Prado (pop. 104,300) 45 km away.
