Just 10 minutes ago, a 5.2-magnitude earthquake struck near Tobelo, Indonesia. The tremor was recorded after midnight on Thursday 26 November 2020 at 12.20 am local time, at an intermediate depth of 118 km below the surface.
The event was filed by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), the first seismological agency to report it.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 5.6 earthquake.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Tobelo (pop. 10,000) located 61 km from the epicenter, Ternate (pop. 101,700) 125 km away, and Sofifi (pop. 36,200) 131 km away.
