An earthquake of magnitude 4.2 occurred 36 minutes ago 49 km southwest of Algiers, Algeria, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported.
The quake hit at a shallow depth of 10 km beneath the epicenter near Mouzaïa in the evening on Thursday 26 November 2020 at 8.00 pm local time. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc. Weak shaking might have been felt in Mouzaïa (pop. 33,000) located 5 km from the epicenter, Chiffa (pop. 23,200) 6 km away, El Affroun (pop. 42,600) 9 km away, Boû Arfa (pop. 44,100) 11 km away, Blida (pop. 182,400) 13 km away, Algiers (pop. 1,977,700) 49 km away, and Bab Ezzouar (pop. 275,600) 55 km away.
