The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported a magnitude 4.2 quake in the Dominican Republic near Peralta 40 minutes ago. The earthquake hit in the morning on Friday 27 November 2020 at 8.19 am local time at a shallow depth of 10 km. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data.
Our monitoring service at VolcanoDiscovery identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.2 as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc. Weak shaking might have been felt in Peralta (pop. 7,200) located 9 km from the epicenter, El Guayabal (pop. 2,800) 12 km away, Tábara Arriba (pop. 3,700) 16 km away, Yayas de Viajama (pop. 5,700) 18 km away, and Padre Las Casas (pop. 8,500) 20 km away.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Santo Domingo Oeste (pop. 701,300) located 83 km from the epicenter, Santiago de los Caballeros (pop. 1,200,000) 88 km away, and Santo Domingo (pop. 2,201,900) 95 km away.
