A shallow magnitude 4.9 earthquake was reported in the afternoon near Gizo, Solomon Islands.
According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the quake hit on Saturday 28 November 2020 at 5.57 pm local time at a shallow depth of 10 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 4.9 earthquake as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Gizo (pop. 6,200) located 83 km from the epicenter.
