A magnitude 4.3 earthquake near Isla San José was reported only 26 minutes ago by Mexico's National Seismological Service (SSN), considered the main national agency that monitors seismic activity in Mexico. The earthquake occurred at an intermediate depth of 77 km beneath the epicenter around noon on Saturday 28 November 2020 at 12.37 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 4.3 earthquake as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Isla San José (pop. 100) located 31 km from the epicenter, La Conquista (pop. 500) 32 km away, El Manguito (pop. 800) 32 km away, El Fortín (pop. 400) 34 km away, and Manuel Ávila Camacho (Ponte Duro) (pop. 1,800) 35 km away.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Tonalá (pop. 32,900) located 66 km from the epicenter, Mapastepec (pop. 17,900) 82 km away, and Arriaga (pop. 22,800) 86 km away.
