An earthquake of magnitude 3.6 occurred only 25 minutes ago 37 miles southwest of Hilo, Hawaii, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported.
The quake hit at a moderately shallow depth of 22 miles beneath the epicenter near Pāhala around noon on Saturday 28 November 2020 at 12.14 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service at VolcanoDiscovery identified a second report from the United States Geological Survey (USGS) which listed the quake at magnitude 3.0.
Despite its relatively small magnitude, the quake could probably be felt very close to the epicenter. Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Pāhala (pop. 1,400) located 8 miles from the epicenter, Volcano Village (pop. 2,600) 15 miles away, Naalehu (pop. 900) 19 miles away, Naalehu (pop. 900) 19 miles away, Wai‘ōhinu (pop. 200) 21 miles away, Hawaiian Paradise Park (pop. 11,400) 35 miles away, Hilo (pop. 43,300) 37 miles away, and Hōlualoa (pop. 8,500) 43 miles away.
