4.6 quake 29 Nov 7:54 am (GMT +3:30)
An earthquake of magnitude 4.6 occurred 1 hour and 42 minutes ago 117 km east of Mohr, Iran, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported.
The quake hit at a shallow depth of 10 km beneath the epicenter near Gerāsh in the morning on Sunday 29 November 2020 at 7.24 am local time. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data.
A second report was later issued by the Iranian Seismological Center (IRSC), which listed it as a magnitude 4.6 earthquake as well. Other agencies reporting the same quake include Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency (BMKG) at magnitude 5.1, Geoscience Australia (GeoAu) at magnitude 5.0, United States Geological Survey (USGS) at magnitude 4.9, and European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 4.9.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc. Weak shaking might have been felt in Gerāsh (pop. 25,300) located 38 km from the epicenter, Kīsh (pop. 20,900) 87 km away, Mohr (pop. 35,000) 117 km away, and Bandar-e Lengeh (pop. 22,800) 120 km away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
