A magnitude 4.4 earthquake near Urenui was reported only 5 minutes ago by New Zealand's Earthquake Commission and Geological Survey (GeoNet), considered the main national agency that monitors seismic activity in New Zealand. The earthquake occurred at an intermediate depth of 145.5 km beneath the epicenter early morning on Monday 30 November 2020 at 6.12 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service at VolcanoDiscovery identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.4 as well.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Urenui (pop. 400) located 41 km from the epicenter, Eltham (pop. 2,200) 46 km away, Ohura (pop. 200) 48 km away, Meremere (pop. 400) 51 km away, Waitara (pop. 6,300) 52 km away, Hawera (pop. 11,100) 58 km away, New Plymouth (pop. 49,200) 61 km away, and Wanganui (pop. 40,300) 82 km away.
