Just 18 minutes ago, a 5.1-magnitude earthquake struck near Neiafu, Tonga. The tremor was recorded around noon on Monday 30 November 2020 at 12.57 pm local time, at a moderately shallow depth of 60 km below the surface.
The event was filed by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the first seismological agency to report it.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Neiafu (pop. 4,300) located 81 km from the epicenter, and Pangai (pop. 1,700) 195 km away.
