The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported a magnitude 4.2 quake in Peru near Huaynacotas, Provincia de La Unión, Arequipa, only 26 minutes ago. The earthquake hit after midnight on Thursday 3 December 2020 at 12.15 am local time at an intermediate depth of 134.8 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 4.2 earthquake as well.
According to preliminary calculations, we do not expect that the quake was felt by many people and did not cause any damage. In Huaynacotas (pop. 850, 21 km away), Piramarca (pop. 54, 23 km away), Antabamba (pop. 140, 24 km away), Sancay (pop. 20, 26 km away), Cupe (pop. 75, 29 km away), Salamanca (pop. 550, 54 km away), Orcopampa (pop. 5,600, 73 km away), and Coracora (pop. 7,400, 86 km away), the quake was probably not felt.
