The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported a magnitude 4.3 quake in Panama near Bucaro, Provincia de Los Santos, only 9 minutes ago. The earthquake hit early afternoon on Wednesday 16 December 2020 at 3:23 pm local time at a very shallow depth of 5 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Bucaro (pop. 400) located 2 km from the epicenter, Isla de Cañas (pop. 310) 10 km away, La Bernardina (pop. 41) 10 km away, and La Liboria (pop. 29) 10 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Flores (pop. 440) located 18 km from the epicenter, and Las Tablas (pop. 8,900) 49 km away.
