The German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported a magnitude 4.4 quake in Greece near Paleochora, Chania, Crete, only 11 minutes ago. The earthquake hit in the morning on Thursday 17 December 2020 at 9:19 am local time at a shallow depth of 10 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 4.3 earthquake.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Gialos (pop. 870) located 36 km from the epicenter, Moni Chrysoskalitissas (pop. 66) 37 km away, and Paleochora (pop. 2,400) 38 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Kasteli (pop. 4,200) located 60 km from the epicenter, Agia Marina (pop. 2,000) 76 km away, Mourniés (pop. 5,300) 79 km away, Chania (pop. 53,900) 82 km away, and Souda (pop. 6,700) 84 km away.
