Just 8 minutes ago, a 4.9-magnitude earthquake struck near Sitia, Lasithi, Crete, Greece. The tremor was recorded early afternoon on Thursday 17 December 2020 at 3:36 pm local time, at a shallow depth of 10 km below the surface.
The event was filed by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the first seismological agency to report it.
A second report was later issued by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), which listed it as a magnitude 4.6 earthquake.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Sitia (pop. 8,700) located 54 km from the epicenter, Agia Marina (pop. 440) 61 km away, Fri (pop. 360) 62 km away, Aghios Nicolaos (pop. 11,400) 75 km away, Istro (pop. 670) 79 km away, Karpathos (pop. 2,200) 83 km away, Kasteli (pop. 12,400) 89 km away, and Kato Gouves (pop. 2,200) 97 km away.
