The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported a magnitude 4.9 quake in Puerto Rico near Guanica, Guánica Barrio-Pueblo, only 9 minutes ago. The earthquake hit around noon on Thursday 24 December 2020 at 12:56 pm local time at a very shallow depth of 5 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Indios (pop. 1,700) located 12 km from the epicenter, Maria Antonia (pop. 1,500) 12 km away, Guanica (pop. 9,200) 12 km away, Fuig (pop. 1,200) 14 km away, Palomas (pop. 2,300) 15 km away, Guayanilla (pop. 5,200) 15 km away, Yauco (pop. 20,300) 16 km away, and Ponce (pop. 152,600) 26 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Bayamon (pop. 203,500) located 91 km from the epicenter, and San Juan (pop. 418,100) 100 km away.
