Just 18 minutes ago, a 4.2-magnitude earthquake struck near Iquique, Provincia de Iquique, Tarapaca, Chile. The tremor was recorded in the afternoon on Friday 25 December 2020 at 4:39 pm local time, at a moderately shallow depth of 34.6 km below the surface.
The event was filed by the National Seismological Center of the University of Chile, the first seismological agency to report it.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 4.2 earthquake as well.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Iquique (pop. 227,500) located 87 km from the epicenter.
