An earthquake of magnitude 5.0 occurred early evening on Friday 25 December 2020 at 6:52 pm local time near Ilo, Provincia de Ilo, Departamento de Moquegua, Peru, as reported by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ).
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at an intermediate depth of 81 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 4.9 earthquake.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in El Algarrobal (pop. 38) located 27 km from the epicenter, Ilo (pop. 53,500) 34 km away, Pacocha (pop. 7,600) 34 km away, San Antonio (pop. 15,600) 50 km away, Moquegua (pop. 54,500) 52 km away, Ilabaya (pop. 9,500) 60 km away, Torata (pop. 7,100) 68 km away, and Tacna (pop. 280,100) 90 km away.
