A magnitude 4.3 earthquake near Fayzabad, Faīẕābād, Badakhshan, Afghanistan, was reported only 24 minutes ago by the United States Geological Survey (USGS), considered one of the key international agencies that monitor seismic activity worldwide. The earthquake occurred at an intermediate to considerable depth of 208.8 km beneath the epicenter in the afternoon on Sunday 27 December 2020 at 4:32 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 4.3 earthquake as well.
According to preliminary calculations, we do not expect that the quake was felt by many people and did not cause any damage. In Farkhār (pop. 10,500, 50 km away), Jurm (pop. 12,100, 59 km away), Fayzabad (pop. 44,400, 74 km away), Taloqan (pop. 64,300, 83 km away), Rustāq (pop. 25,600, 89 km away), and Ashkāsham (pop. 12,100, 104 km away), the quake was probably not felt.
