The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) reported a magnitude 4.2 quake in the Philippines near Iba, Zambales, Central Luzon, only 27 minutes ago. The earthquake hit early morning on Tuesday 29 December 2020 at 1:57 am local time at a moderately shallow depth of 32 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.2 as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Iba (pop. 26,900) located 15 km from the epicenter, Amuñgan (pop. 12,400) 16 km away, Liozon (pop. 3,200) 17 km away, Botolan (pop. 23,000) 18 km away, Palauig (pop. 2,900) 20 km away, and San Juan (pop. 5,000) 22 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Poblacion, San Felipe (pop. 15,000) located 31 km from the epicenter, and Masinloc (pop. 28,000) 32 km away.
