A magnitude 4.9 earthquake near Tanabe, Tanabe-shi, Wakayama, Japan, was reported only 13 minutes ago by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), considered one of the key international agencies that monitor seismic activity worldwide. The earthquake occurred at a great depth of 444 km beneath the epicenter early morning on Tuesday 29 December 2020 at 4:23 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by NIED, which listed it as a magnitude 5.7 earthquake. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 4.7.
According to preliminary calculations, we do not expect that the quake was felt by many people and did not cause any damage. In Shingū (pop. 31,600, 76 km away), Tanabe (pop. 69,600, 92 km away), and Gobō (pop. 27,200, 116 km away), the quake was probably not felt.
