A magnitude 5.1 earthquake near Pucon, Provincia de Cautín, Region de la Araucania, Chile, was reported only 19 minutes ago by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), considered one of the key international agencies that monitor seismic activity worldwide. The earthquake occurred at an intermediate depth of 104 km beneath the epicenter in the afternoon on Tuesday 29 December 2020 at 4:29 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the United States Geological Survey (USGS) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.7. A third agency, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), reported the same quake at magnitude 5.1.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Pucon (pop. 27,000) located 6 km from the epicenter, Villarrica (pop. 31,600) 24 km away, Panguipulli (pop. 16,300) 47 km away, Loncoche (pop. 15,600) 58 km away, Pitrufquén (pop. 13,700) 70 km away, Freire (pop. 7,800) 72 km away, Vilcun (pop. 9,200) 78 km away, and Temuco (pop. 238,100) 87 km away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
