An earthquake of magnitude 4.5 occurred early morning on Thursday 31 December 2020 at 1:10 am local time near Porirua, Porirua City, Wellington, New Zealand, as reported by New Zealand's Earthquake Commission and Geological Survey (GeoNet).
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a shallow depth of 25.4 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Upper Hutt (pop. 38,400) located 10 km from the epicenter, Porirua (pop. 50,900) 10 km away, Lower Hutt (pop. 101,200) 15 km away, Paraparaumu (pop. 25,300) 19 km away, Ohariu (pop. 920) 20 km away, Khandallah (pop. 8,500) 22 km away, Wellington (pop. 381,900) 27 km away, Kelburn (pop. 3,600) 27 km away, and Brooklyn (pop. 3,900) 29 km away.

It felt as if the earth quake rolled beneath me. dogs were barking from it. I went back to sleep. My mother staying with me was in a corner room and was sleeping facing north west and she said she felt it was so violent she hurt her hip.
