A moderately shallow magnitude 4.3 earthquake was reported in the morning near La Ligua, Petorca Province, Region de Valparaiso, Chile.
According to the National Seismological Center of the University of Chile, the quake hit on Wednesday 30 December 2020 at 7:03 am local time at a moderately shallow depth of 35.2 km. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 4.1 earthquake. A third agency, the United States Geological Survey (USGS), reported the same quake at magnitude 4.1.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include La Ligua (pop. 24,900) located 78 km from the epicenter, Illapel (pop. 22,800) 82 km away, Salamanca (pop. 13,300) 92 km away, and Hacienda La Calera (pop. 49,100) 105 km away.
