Just 18 minutes ago, a 4.4-magnitude earthquake struck near San Pedro de Atacama, Provincia de El Loa, Antofagasta, Chile. The tremor was recorded in the afternoon on Friday 1 January 2021 at 4:33 pm local time, at an intermediate depth of 112.1 km below the surface.
The event was filed by the National Seismological Center of the University of Chile, the first seismological agency to report it.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 4.4 earthquake as well.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include San Pedro de Atacama (pop. 2,000) located 86 km from the epicenter.
