The Nicaraguan Institute of Territorial Studies (INETER) reported a magnitude 4.7 quake in Guatemala near Champerico, Municipio de Champerico, Departamento de Retalhuleu, only 13 minutes ago. The earthquake hit in the evening on Saturday 2 January 2021 at 9:25 pm local time at a shallow depth of 28 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Champerico (pop. 7,800) located 21 km from the epicenter, Ocos (pop. 9,500) 49 km away, Retalhuleu (pop. 36,700) 57 km away, San Sebastian (pop. 14,800) 61 km away, Nuevo San Carlos (pop. 19,200) 61 km away, Coatepeque (pop. 45,700) 66 km away, and Mazatenango (pop. 44,100) 69 km away.
