Just 9 minutes ago, a 4.5-magnitude earthquake struck near Calingasta, Departamento de Calingasta, San Juan, Argentina. The tremor was recorded early evening on Tuesday 5 January 2021 at 7:00 pm local time, at an intermediate depth of 104 km below the surface.
The event was filed by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), the first seismological agency to report it.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 4.8 earthquake. A third agency, INPRES, reported the same quake at magnitude 4.9.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Salamanca (pop. 13,300) located 66 km from the epicenter, Illapel (pop. 22,800) 86 km away, and Calingasta (pop. 8,200) 91 km away.
