Magnitude 5.8 earthquake strikes near San Antonio de los Cobres, Departamento de Los Andes, Salta, Argentina
5.8 quake 10 Jan 12:54 am (GMT -3)
An earthquake of magnitude 5.8 occurred only 9 minutes ago 46 km northwest of San Antonio de los Cobres, Argentina, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported.
The quake hit at an intermediate to considerable depth of 199 km beneath the epicenter near San Antonio de los Cobres, Departamento de Los Andes, Salta, Argentina, after midnight on Sunday 10 January 2021 at 12:54 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 5.7 earthquake. A third agency, INPRES, reported the same quake at magnitude 6.1.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in San Antonio de los Cobres (pop. 4,000) located 46 km from the epicenter.
