Just 10 minutes ago, a 5.0-magnitude earthquake struck near Calama, Provincia de El Loa, Antofagasta, Chile. The tremor was recorded early evening on Sunday 10 January 2021 at 7:11 pm local time, at an intermediate depth of 108 km below the surface.
The event was filed by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), the first seismological agency to report it.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 5.0 earthquake as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Calama (pop. 143,100) located 39 km from the epicenter.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include San Pedro de Atacama (pop. 2,000) located 64 km from the epicenter.
