Update Tue, 12 Jan 2021, 06:30
Significant magnitude 5.0 quake hits 88 km southwest of La Esperanza (El Zapotal), Mexico after midnight
5.0 quake 12 Jan 12:10 am (GMT -6)
5.0 quake 12 Jan 12:10 am (GMT -6)
A very shallow magnitude 5.0 earthquake was reported after midnight near La Esperanza (El Zapotal), Pijijiapan, Chiapas, Mexico.
According to the Nicaraguan Institute of Territorial Studies (INETER), the quake hit on Tuesday 12 January 2021 at 12:10 am local time at a very shallow depth of 1 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), which listed it as a magnitude 4.8 earthquake. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 4.9.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in La Esperanza (El Zapotal) (pop. 1000) located 88 km from the epicenter, Pampa Honda (pop. 150) 88 km away, Buenavista (pop. 390) 90 km away, Las Cuaches (pop. 340) 90 km away, El Cariño (pop. 12) 92 km away, and Dos Pasajes (pop. 10) 96 km away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you're in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
