The German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported a magnitude 5.3 quake in Afghanistan near Fayzabad, Faīẕābād, Badakhshan, only 12 minutes ago. The earthquake hit after midnight on Sunday 17 January 2021 at 12:02 am local time at an intermediate to considerable depth of 190 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 5.5 earthquake.
