4.4 quake 9.6 km east of Leon, Nicaragua, 17 Jan 2021 12:01 am (GMT -6)
A intermediate to deep magnitude 4.4 earthquake was reported after midnight near Leon, Departamento de Leon, Nicaragua.
According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the quake hit on Sunday 17 January 2021 at 12:01 am local time at an intermediate to considerable depth of 153 km. The strength of the earthquake may have been tempered by its relative great depth below the surface, which makes it feel weaker in absolute terms. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the United States Geological Survey (USGS) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.4 as well.
