An earthquake of magnitude 4.2 occurred only 14 minutes ago 15 km south of Champerico, Guatemala, the Nicaraguan Institute of Territorial Studies (INETER) reported.
The quake hit at a shallow depth of 28 km beneath the epicenter near Champerico, Municipio de Champerico, Departamento de Retalhuleu, Guatemala, late at night on Sunday 17 January 2021 at 10:33 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Champerico (pop. 7,800) located 15 km from the epicenter.
